In this video interview, Seth Godin (Permission Marketing, Squidoo and Tribes) provides his unique perspective on the subject of sales and marketing in the Web 2.0 Internet world.

Godin is quick to point out that although the “Web” is one of the more alluring tools for sales and marketing professionals to seek prospects, it is completely different than the “old world” environment they are used to working.

Several of the points he makes in this short video interview include:

Unlike former offline advertising practices, people on the Internet can simply ignore the ads;

The “Web” mandates the use of permission marketing approaches;

Once you have an audience, they can publicize for you through various forms of social media; &

Online marketing and sales pros need to focus on Web 2.0 tools, especially blogs and blogging.

Rather than try and cover all the points Seth Godin covers in the video, just give it a quick watch below and get the insight firsthand …..

Remember, the Internet is a completely different environment and different approaches to sales and marketing are required to succeed in the modern Web 2.0 world ….

This morning I became convinced that social networking sites and Web 2.0 tools are truly everywhere!

It’s almost common place to expect to see references to Twitter, Facebook and MySpace on cable and national network newscasts. I suppose it was just a matter of time to hear references to the major social networking sites on the local news program. It was also no big shock to hear both the CNN pundits and George Stephanopoulos of ABC News request a follow on Twitter and Facebook during their Sunday morning talk shows.

Shortly thereafter, however, I changed the channel to the local (Kansas City) news channel (KCTV 5) to catch up on the local information and weather. As luck would have it, I changed channels just as a special feature segment started.

The topic: Low-cost Marketing Techniques for the Small Business Owner. During the segment, the reporter was interviewing Mr. Jerry Smith with the Marketing Action Club located in the KC Metro area.

Mr. Smith was quick to point out that during these tough economic times, even small businesses need to keep a substantial marketing effort alive. Failure to do so could result in the customer-base losing contact and confidence in their businesses’ viability.

He specifically pointed out five different low or no-cost methods to maintain a reasonable marketing effort to keep your message in front of your target audience. To my surprise (only because of where it was mentioned) these included:

Article marketing using sites such as Ezine Articles;

Social networking presence on Twitter, Facebook, MySpace and LinkedIn;

Blogging;

Email marketing campaigns; and

Local networking clubs.

Even though I interact with numerous references to the first four tools online each day, it brought a smile to my face to both see and hear it on a live local TV news cast. I commend Jerry Smith and his Marketing Action Club for a great set of basic tools and insightful message.

All of these tools are indeed low or no cost options to assist anyone (small store-front business, network marketing business or home business) get there message out to their target audience and help build a web marketing presence.

Always remember, however, to use the proper approach and be sure to provide information that helps the prospect or customer find a solution to their problem and just don’t “pitch your product or service”.

Twitter me this and Tweet me that; it seems that Twitter is the new superstar in the social networking arena especially when applied to business building and marketing.

But First, What is Twitter?

Hitting the Web-stage in 2006, Twitter entered as both a social networking and micro-blogging site using a relatively unique approach where Tweeple send short messages limited to 140 characters or less to followers or even directed at individuals.

Twitter has quickly risen through the ranks of the social networking arena. Estimates indicate that Twitter has risen to be the third most used social network behind Facebook (#1) and MySpace (#2).

Beyond day to day social networking, Twitter has even gained celebrity status with numerous references on TV newscasts and info-based shows (CNN, The Daily Show) and was referenced throughout the recent political campaigns.

There is little doubt that Twitter is on the rise and here to stay ….

If you are not yet familiar with Twitter, here is a short video explaining the basics of “Twitter in Plain English”:

Twitter Business Building & Increasing Marketing Effectiveness with Twitter

Spend a little time on Twitter watching the Tweets float by and you will quickly realize many marketers have gravitated to this social networking platform. It is also obvious that many of the posts originate from in-experienced or aggressive marketers.

Why is it so obvious?

Mainly because most of these individuals use Twitter to constantly promote some product or service. The problem is, however, most Tweeples’ reaction to the direct “sales Tweet” is either to ignore the tweets or worse, un-follow the sender!

Marketing on Twitter is definitely an art form in itself and most of us should really take the time to stuffy those that are apparently doing it right.

Here is second video borrowed from Ed Dale’s “Thirty Day Challenge Series” describing one individual’s use of like his business blog and Twitter account to increase exposure in an “attractive” manner:

It’s a great video description (IMHO) of an fantastic approach to online marketing and integrating tools like blogs and social networks to both deliver value and offer your wares in an manner that is non-offensive.

I believe we should all take some time and study the video and increase the effectiveness of using Twitter in our business building and marketing efforts. I know I will!
