Comparison of Two Free Keyword Search Tools: Wordtracker versus Google Adwords
Creating a blog, web page, Squidoo lens, article etc. that is attractive to the search engines has a major influence on the content’s organic (free search engine listing) page ranking. Natural keyword placement in titles, meta-tags, and throughout the content text is a primary factor for the success of your page or site when being crawled by the search engine spiders.
Optimization of keywords and keywords phrases involves the use of keyword search tools such as the Wordtracker Free Keyword Suggestion Tool or the Google Adwords: Keyword Tool (also free).
The sole purpose of this post is to provide a video tutorial overview of these two keyword tools. Future posts will cover various aspects behind the keyword selection process (basics, research, analysis, strategy, etc.).
Before you start the video, however, a little background data regarding the source of the results for each tool may be helpful.
Wordtracker Free Keyword Suggestion Tool:
- Results provided from this tool are the “estimated daily search volume for a given keyword” (text in quotes from the Wordtracker site);
- The data are estimated from terms they search on Dogpile.com and Metacrawler.com (collectively 0.63% (less than 1%) of searches across all engines).
- Results provided from the Google Tool “shows the approximate number of search queries matching your keywords that were performed on Google and the search network in the previous calendar month” (test in quotes from the Google site) or annualized monthly average;
- In January 2009, CNET and other sources report that Google’s share of search engine traffic was 63% in the U.S. and 55% across the Globe.
Since Wordtracker’s results are daily they should be multiplied by a factor of 30 (average days per month), which I forgot to do when making the video. On the other hand, those results are estimates based on searches conducted on search engines receiving almost two orders of magnitude less traffic than Google.
Just keep those numbers in mind when considering the results and enjoy the video!

The Google tool is great – I also use market samurai – its a paid tool but the keyword selection part of the product is free for life (even after the free trial has expired)

Hi Lis,
Thanks for stopping over and commenting. I have found the Google tool very helpful and had used the Wordtracker tool in the past. I’ll have a look at market samurai as well.
(looks like you’ve stirred up quite the hornet’s nest over at your SBI post!)
Funny -eh all that free, keyword focussed content! I just hope the poor people writing it are being paid for their time!

Phillip … thanks for the great comment, being a science nerd I get into anything that involves research and enjoy sharing it as well. It’s by no means “the answer” but every little bit of info helps ….
Thanks for this comparision. I have a bad experience with Google keywords. So i would never recommend this to anyone. I would tell that Google is stepping ahead to provide you a single bit of tool for every purpose. But the google keyword tool is somewhat like piting up on it. I have used this in past with another tool from serp analytics but found some broad results from google. So i throw it off and now only using only tool from serp analytics and it can be found here http://www.serpanalytics.com/tools/top_keywords
Thanks Jim….great video with helpful advice. I was going to sign up with Wordtracker, but I knew there was impartial advice out there somewhere…. then I found your site!
